It’s Baseball Season! Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, Amazing Cuisine & Craft Beer! Yes … Craft Beer!

“Before the Rangers, there were the Spurs.”

Companion had been providing a timeline of the growth of his hometown (Arlington, Texas) including the addition of General Motors, Six Flags over Texas, the Texas Rangers Major League Baseball IMG_2499Team and more recently, the Dallas Cowboys.

His fondest childhood memories were associated with going to Turnpike Stadium to watch the Minor League franchise Dallas-Fort Worth Spurs (there prior to the Rangers) play other teams in the Texas League with names like the Amarillo Sonics, El Paso Sun Kings and the Tulsa Oilers.

The games and stadium, he said, were truly family-oriented, the players approachable and the fans “pretty darn respectful of the opposing team and of one another”.

Companion said he was there the night Gene Etter got married at home plate and the night Dick Armstrong threw a no-hitter against the Spurs. Although we have been together almost a quarter of a century, it was fascinating to hear what memories he had from his youth about his hometown baseball team.

IMG_2538I KNEW he would be so excited to learn I had been invited by Marco LaNave (Media Relations for the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp) to attend a media event at The Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville to try the incredible new menu additions to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp baseball team’s extensive food menu!

The event started at noon and before being turned loose on the delicious new creations, we were introduced to Harold Craw (General Manager of the team), Noel Blaha (Assistant General Manager) and Ernest Hopkins (Director of Food & Beverage), who provided some background on the team’s decision to expand their menu and how they chose a variety of styles and ingredients to be sensitive to those with food allergies and those who are following a certain diet regimen.
IMG_2546

IMG_2519The food will be available in at least one of the many food vendor locations stationed throughout the park. Companion and I were very excited to see Bold City Brewery and Intuition Ale Works beer available in cans and agreed the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp had knocked one out of the park by creating the Craft Cave, soon to offer a dozen different craft beer selections on draft! To find the Craft Cave, stay at street level on the third base side. Looking across A. Philip Randolph Boulevard, the Craft Cave is directly across the street from the entrance of the Jacksonville Arena.

Your toughest decision will be what food to pair with that craft beer in your hand!IMG_2528

Besides what you might consider fairly straightforward ballpark food, consider the following additions:

IMG_2507Boom Boom Shrimp in a Waffle Bowl – Popcorn Shrimp are nestled in a crispy waffle bowl, topped with green onions. This Waffle Bowl provides an easy way to tote and hold this delicious spicy dish.

IMG_2512Philly Grilled Cheese – Ground Philly steak made with peppers, onions and American cheese. Tastes as great as it sounds and smells!

IMG_2510Grilled Shrimp Po’ Boy with Cole Slaw – This traditional Sandwich is restyled with fresh grilled Mayport shrimp and topped with cole slaw. Take it from this Cajun girl, don’t miss this one!

IMG_2520Surf & Turf Burger – 8oz. burger topped with 3 Jumbo Shrimp, rested on grilled Texas Toast. A half-pound of beef and plump Jumbo Shrimp – the perfect combo to fit the Greater Jacksonville-area culture – appropriately filling and great to eat while watching the game!

IMG_2541Coconut Torpedo Shrimp (Fried Jumbo Shrimp) – A light, flaky coconut batter lends crunch to tail-on torpedo shrimp. Sweet and salty offering which will pair extremely well with a pale ale or cream ale!

IMG_2542Shrimp & Grits – These elegant bite-sized portion cakes, made with shrimp, grits and bacon bursting with coastal flavor. At a ballgame? Awesome idea! Tasty, easy to carry and hold, you’ll probably go back for another order!

IMG_2525Jumbolaya – Build deep flavors by sautéing the aromatic trinity of onion, celery and pepper in the andouille chicken and shrimp drippings with herbs, garlic and spices. Being from Louisiana, I am very picky about Jumbolaya – and this one rocked!

IMG_2522Mozzarella Caprese – Fresh mozzarella, tomato slices, basil, oregano, olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette drizzle. A great lighter and cooler option for the hot summer evenings!

IMG_2515Mayport Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail – Mayport Jumbo Shrimp served with spicy, house-made cocktail sauce. I’m going to pair this with the Mozzarella Caprese as my early-inning-appetizers!

IMG_2533Bold City Burger Pie – A grilled 16-ounce beef patty, covered with two slices of pepper jack cheese, served between two 8-inch pepperoni pizzas. Yes, a one-pound burger between two 8-inch pizzas – the Grand Slam of Portion Sizes of the new additions to the team’s impressive menu line-up!

Their classic Traditional Menu still has corn dogs, $2 hot dogs, brats, sausage, hamburgers, chicken tenders, pizza, French Fries, nachos, pretzels, peanuts cracker jacks, popcorn and Uncle Ray’s Potato Chips! Ask about adding shrimp to your nachos and pizza!

Those currently focusing on Health & Diet will find Salad Shakers, Fresh Fruit Cups, Grilled Marinated Chicken Sandwich, wraps and Kosher Hebrew National Franks awaiting them!

Ready for some sweets? How about Mr. Softee Ice Cream, brownies, cookies, candy, churros, funnel cake fries, Hippo Pops, Mini Melts, Sqwincher Sqweeze, King-sized candy bars, frozen bananas and Hot Cookie with Ice Cream?

IMG_2552

Ticket prices are a great value! Check the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp website for Season Tickets and Individual Game Tickets prices. The “Hot Corner” on the third baseIMG_2569 side is only $15 per seat AND includes one drink ticket – PLUS it is very close to the Craft Cave! That’s where companion and I will be on Opening Night (Wednesday, April 12 at 7:05 pm)!

The “Dugout Box” tickets are only $18 per seat – an amazing deal at a ballpark! There are All-You-Can-Eat Group Picnics and Special Hospitality areas for you and your loved ones, office or church group, or simply a bunch of your friends to enjoy! For Group Outing details, call 904.358.2846.

For birthday party information, contact Ashley McCallen at 904.224.8533 to find out about their amazing ticket-and-meal packages!

My sincere thanks to Marco LaNave for the invitation and to Harold Craw, Noel Blaha and Ernest Hopkins for enduring my questions and to the rest of the staff for the wonderful attentive service!

Yes, “before the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp there were the Jacksonville Suns” – but get out this season and make some “Jumbo memories” of your own with your family and friends – and eat, eat, eat – and “Root, Root, Root” for our own home team, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp!

Celebrate National Beer Day – April 7

natl beer day 1
The end of Prohibition was anxiously anticipated by many in the US and President Franklin Roosevelt signed into law a bill which allowed people to brew and sell beer on April 7, 1933. This was regarded as one of the major first steps in getting rid of a heavy-handed restriction thrust upon the American people by a government “too big for its britches”.

That day – April 7 – was destined to become “National Beer Day” – and what a wonderful idea that was!

TODAY, grab some friends, a Designated Driver, (or Uber/Lyft/taxi contact) and get out to your favorite local beer purveyor and enjoy this day set aside for one of our favorite things – beer!

Hyperion Brewing Co. Grand Opening May 19

An advocate of human rights, James Freeman Clarke, once said, “I can do small things in a great way” – a very pithy statement from this 19th century theologian and outspoken liberal minister.Hyperion Opening Soon

It is obvious Alexandra “Alex” McKeown, Owner and co-founder of Hyperion Brewing Company is taking that thought to heart in establishing the Greater Jacksonville area’s first nanobrewery in Historic Springfield. The Grand Opening is scheduled for Friday, May 19! No matter what “size” definition you use for “nanobrewery”, Hyperion fits the bill!

alexandraAlex and the team at Hyperion will be producing their artisan craft beer selections from a 1-barrel system and will not initially have a “core lineup” of beer styles. Alex said they want the Jacksonville craft beer community to ultimately determine their ongoing releases.

Thus, Hyperion Brewing will serve a rotating tap list with various styles to enjoy. Alex stated, “We prefer flights to flagships. We believe in freedom of choice. Our goal is to let the public decide what our core beers should be. We will use our POS system data and feedback from guests in the taproom to determine which beers to distribute in the future.”

Opening Day will kick off on Friday, May 19 with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 4:30 p.m. Doors will officially open at 5:00 pm. The first fifty (50) guests will receive a FREE branded flight glass and ticket for a FREE beer at a later date!

Springfield-based Eddis and Sons Food Truck will be there serving up legitimate, Philadelphia-style cheese steaks!eddisson

The opening also leads directly into the Historic Springfield Tour of Homes hosted by SPAR (Springfield Preservation and Revitalization) on Saturday, May 20 and Sunday, May 21 from Noon – 5:00 p.m.

Hyperion Brewing will be open during the Tour of Homes and will feature fifteen taps, however, there will be a limited selection of Hyperion beers available. “We’ll be brewing at a break-neck pace to have as many of our beers ready for the grand opening as possible,” says Head Brewer Troy.

Hyperion will offer Crowler cans to allow guests to take beer off-premise. Patrons can purchase up to two Crowlers per person during the grand opening weekend.

The Jax Beer Bus has partnered with Hyperion Brewing Company to make transportation from the beaches area to the brewery safe and convenient!jax brew bus

The Jax Beer Bus will pick up from Green Room Brewing Company at 4:30 p.m., 6:15 p.m., and 7:30 p.m.

All guests must be 21 years or older. Tickets are $15.00 round-trip and include a ticket for a free beer from Hyperion Brewing Company at a later date. The Jax Beer Bus will be BYOLB, “Bring Your Own Local Beer.” For more information please email info@hyperionbrewing.com or call (904) 612-3987.

Wicked Barley Brewing – Grand Opening July 30

Settlement.

The concept which comes to mind in most current inhabitants of this planet involves an official agreement intended to resolve a dispute. Floating about in an era of negativity, you have to ask “To what have we allowed ourselves to devolve?”

Just a few short generations ago, the word “settlement” had a more popular and positive connotation, though – “a place, typically one that has hitherto been uninhabited, where people establish a community”. Pioneers working together to accomplish things for the greater good.

It was common to see early settlements located in the vicinity of a 4470b78f-b581-4f26-8717-03573c26db39significant water source – a river, a lake, etc. Why? Those with “a keen sense of the obvious” will answer – “For drinking water?” But, why else?

Water served as a means of transport – of goods and people – so, the close proximity of a water source brought folks together socially – and allowed them to procure those things absolutely needed to survive back home – and to maybe share some fellowship, food and drink with other families with the common denominator of making a new life in a new region. A sense of community thus had its genesis with the “crossing of paths” of these early pioneers.

A stratospheric pioneer of sorts, Alex Baumgartner, spoke of two f3680fcc-ffdb-4f40-bdfe-ffeb165ce73ffamous pioneers:

“If the Wright brothers hadn’t put their lives on the line, we would not be flying around the world these days. So we need pioneers.”

Alex, by the way, is an Austrian skydiver who became the first human to break the sound barrier OUTSIDE a vehicle when he jumped from a helium balloon for the Red Bull Stratos project.

All of us in the Greater Jacksonville craft beer community now have IMG_5287a new pioneer to cheer – and support.

Wicked Barley Brewing Company – Naughty Ales for Noble Souls – will have their Grand Opening on July 30!

Last night (Friday, July 22), Wicked Barley hosted a Media Night and companion and I were excited and honored to be invited.

Located at 4100 Baymeadows Road on Goodby’s Creek off the St. Johns River, it is very easy to get there and with its ample parking lot, easy to find a spot.

Granted, they are not a pioneer by geography – Veterans United Craft IMG_5279Brewery is a mere four miles away.
They are not a pioneer in the business of creating craft beer in Jacksonville, obviously.
They are not a pioneer in the business of creating meads and ciders in Jacksonville, obviously.
They ARE a pioneer, however, in combining a microbrewery, meadery, cider house, full-kitchen restaurant and multi-platform transit options – all under one roof!

The décor is modern, light and upscale “trading post on the river”. Very comfortable in its interior and exterior seating options, Wicked Barley will undoubtedly be a very popular destination for drinking and dining.

IMG_5303Their unique focus on providing access from the creek via boat or kayak bodes well for Wicked Barley’s future here in Jacksonville. The dock will handle between 10 and 20 boats, depending on size – and kayakers can pull right up onto the “beach” Wicked Barley has established in this pristine creek-bed atmosphere.

In speaking with Chef Brad (Sueflohn), we learned his plan is to be constantly updating the menu, providing an ever-changing array of unique “good-for the-soul” delicious items. Even the pretzels will be made from scratch!

In speaking with Patrick Pruitt, Phil Maple and Brett Baker of Wicked Barley, some tantalizing details were shared:

• By early September, they hope to have a IMG_5276combination of approximately 20 beers, meads and ciders available!
• Soon, using variants of a base brew creation, develop up to about 40 different adult beverages from which to choose!
• Wicked Barley hopes to host Beer Dinners in the rear portion of the brewery in the future!
• A canning line is on their radar screen – more to come!
• Wicked Barley will be scheduling Special Releases (bombers) in the future!
• There will be other amazing Events at/in the brewery!

Ed, Beth & Steve

Ed, Beth & Steve

We were fortunate to be able to bring Ed and Beth Stansel and Steve and Linda Campbell with us for the evening. Ed was able to ask questions and tour the brewing facility – which houses the equipment for all three creations: craft beer, meads and ciders.

Head Brewer Fred Thibodeaux was formerly Lead Brewer for Cigar City Brewing in Tampa – and turns out to be a Cajun – just like yours truly! Having Lafayette in common I hope will lead to some crab, shrimp and crawfish boils in the future!

There was a wonderful selection of food provided – cheese curds and

with Lacey and Fred

with Lacey and Fred

spectacular sandwiches of broccoli pulled pork. We heard there was other food, as well – but we had not been able to get there any earlier.

We saw Joe Talentino from I Know Jax, the Brew Nymph Linda Johnson and Brett‘ s wife Shannon Baker who has been part of the Jacksonville Chapter of Girls Pint Out since its inception.

Patrick provided a tour of the exterior and dock areas and later,

Linda, Ed & Patrick

Linda, Ed & Patrick

Brett gave companion and I a look at the brewery equipment and a behind-the-veil glimpse of the full-kitchen set up!

We enjoyed the fellowship of the evening and the beer from the guest taps we had selected. It was exciting to see the results of a long road of hard effort on the part of the folks at Wicked Barley in getting permitted, constructed and ready to sell their own creations! A hearty “Well done!” to all of those involved at Wicked Barley for stickin’ with it – and seeing your vision come to fruition!

Owner, Brett Baker

Owner, Brett Baker

My sincere appreciation to Patrick, Phil, Tobin, Brett and Fred for the invitation to the Media Night event and the amazing hospitality of all of the Wicked Barley family – and for staying late and answering my questions!

Jacksonvillians! … it is time for a great new adventure! Grab a non-craft-beer drinker or two and get in your car – or boat – or kayak – or even jump from a helium balloon at 127,852 feet above – and “git yer civilized butt” over to Wicked Barley Brewing Company!

Let’s show them the Greater Jacksonville craft beer community supports them, welcomes them to the family and appreciates their willingness to “risk it all” in establishing a new and unique type of venue for all of us to enjoy!

Craft Beer Drinkers that Healthier Habits that Non-Craft Beer Drinkers …

We ALL need a little positive self-affirmation from time to time, right?creftbeer fox new

Please read the linked article below. It is saying something that we craft beer lovers have known, at least instinctively, since emerging from the primordial ooze of our early beer-drinking life:
1) Craft beer drinkers have an overall healthier lifestyle than our macro-brew preferring counterparts;
2) Craft beer drinkers (especially as their palate develops) are selective when deciding what to spend our money on – fewer higher quality choices rather than cases of cheaper quality beer;
3) Craft beer drinkers budget calories based upon our expected intake (e.g. – there’s an upcoming beer festival in a few days – “I’d better pace myself until then”;
And pat ourselves on the back, number four:
4) Craft beer drinkers are a little smarter than those who drink other adult beverages.

So, when your non-craft-beer-drinkin’ friends call you and ask what you have planned for Saturday, tell them, “Well, I’m going to bone up on some trigonometric formulas, go to yoga class, jog a couple of miles, grab some delicious craft beer then go home and read a book. Want to join me … dummy?”

Draft Beer soon to be available on KLM Airlines

This could add a new wrinkle in the concept of the “Mile High Club”!klm airline drafts
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, although delayed a little bit in the roll-out, will soon be offering draft beer from a tap on some of their flights!

In lieu of carbon dioxide, the process of delivering the beer would be via air pressure compressor. Heineken is apparently leading the way with getting their special keg into an “airline-center-aisle-and-flight-attendant-friendly trolley” – with the caveat that the beer will need to be cooled prior to loading the plane. Baby-steps. Baby-steps are good – and I hope it catches on. I see flights from one beer region to another having local brews from both regions available, for one thing.

To read up on this developing process, please visit:

The Mazer – Meadery and Cider House opening soon in Jacksonville, FL

So, this is what I’ve been doing along with running The Silver Cow and The Annex. The Mazer Meadery &openingsoonmazer Cider House coming to King St. It took me and companion about three seconds – maybe two – to decide we wanted to “partner up” with Ed and Beth Stansel on creating a new spot with a new focus in the King Street Beer District – The Mazer!

The Mazer will be serving meads and ciders (along with a smaller but impressive selection of fine wines and craft beer) and food items especially selected to pair well with the available beverages.

The bar itself will most probably open before the federal and state licenses for producing meads are obtained. The meadery/microwinery will be called East Florida Fermentology and will be headed up by Ed Stansel (he’s won bling for his beer!), a local figure well respected for his homebrewing and fermenting skills. Ed’s recipes have been brewed as commercially viable creations by a number of our local microbreweries.

VERNON’S PILSNER RELEASE PARTY. Sat. April 2 at Bold City Brewery

Vernon Dean Poster Apr 2016 2

Join Bold City Brewery for VERNON’S PILSNER RELEASE PARTY. Sat. April 2, 6pm. Live Music, Food & $1 for every Pint will go to St. Johns Riverkeeper.

Vernon Dean, a Bold City fixture in and around the brewery, will never be forgotten by all who visited or worked at Bold City Brewery while he was here. Vernon handled chef duties for Jolly Mon Catering inside Bold City and suddenly passed away in January 2015. We have brewed a special beer in his honor – Vernon’s Pilsner – which was created to reflect Vernon’s lovable golden and bitter personality. This is Bold City’s first pilsner.

This Saturday (April 2), Bold City Brewery is honored to host the VERNON’S PILSNER RELEASE PARTY starting at 6 pm and a toast to Vernon at 7 pm! We will be donating $1 from every pint sold to St. Johns Riverkeeper, an organization that was close to Vernon’s heart.

There will be live music performed by the awesome Kustom Deluxe band beginning at 7pm and La Bodega Original will be serving Paella for this special event. As a reminder, the JTA Trolley will be running that evening and you can get your passes right here at Bold City!

Come out and join Bold City Brewery as they celebrate the life of Vernon Dean! We’re sure he’d say we are just doing this as an excuse to drink!

The Underdark will be unleashed at Intuition Ale Works

Special beer releases ignite excitement within pockets of the craft beer community. Our local releases bring Jacksonvillians out in droves and some of these releases achieve multi-region acclaim through the various beer exchange programs and folks simply taking a bottle or two with them when they visit family and friends outside of Florida.

Underdark 2016
One such release is the incredible Underdark Barrel Aged Imperial Stout created by the very talented brewers at Intuition Ale Works. Each year, on calendars of craft-beer-focused individuals (and couples) here in the Greater Jacksonville area, the date of its release is circled BIG! With good reason!

This Saturday (Feb 6), Intuition Ale Works (720 King Street – 904.683.7720) will be releasing this year’s Underdark – aged for over a year in Redemption Rye Whiskey barrels!

Intuition’s bar will be open from Noon to 9pm. Please note they will be closing down King Street in front of the brewery, so please pre-plan your parking! Multiple vintages of Underdark will be on tap along with several small-batch brews. Limited edition Tees and Snifters will be available for purchase and Funkadelic Food Truck and M Shack will be on site selling their delicious food creations!

Bottle sales will begin promptly at NOON on Saturday, Feb 6th, at the brewery. Bottles are $15 each, CASH ONLY, limit two bottles per person! These bottles WILL sell out quickly, so be sure and get to Intuition early!

With the opening of my own craft-beer centric establishments (Silver Cow and The Annex), I was forced to tear myself away from arranging events for this amazing group of girls.

I am now UN-TEARING myself away – by offering the Jacksonville Chapter of Girls Pint Out (JGPO) some very special specials and opportunities.

Hopollo & Beer Class: Beer 101

How does one decide to try craft beer for the first time?Hopollo

Does Hopollo, the Greek God of Microbreweries reach down with a malty worted finger and touch someone not currently enjoying what craft beer has to offer?

No, though that mental image intrigues me. For instance, what would Hopollo be wearing? … never mind.

Anyway, the typical migrations from non-beer-drinkers and mass-produced-beer-drinkers into the microbrew community begin by:

a) those who have tired of the wine and hard liquor scene;
b) those who have been trying to find palate-excitement with the mass-produced brands for years with no luck;
c) spouses of craft beer drinkers who decide having a shared exciting experience is important;
d) friends of craft beer drinkers who want to be part of the fun;
e) non-drinkers.

It follows then that it falls upon us, the veteran craft beer enthusiasts, to assist these folks in their initial steps.

Folks are hesitant to “jump right in” because:

1) they don’t want to be embarrassed by being identified as a novice;
2) they don’t want to “waste money” on beer with tastes that don’t resonate with their individual palate;
3) they feel they have to be able to describe the beer like the pros do.

Thus, Silver Cow has decided to begin a series of classes to help those wanting to try craft beer develop confidence in selecting the right beer (for them) from a myriad of tap handles.
Beer 101 Jan 23 2016

Beer Class: Beer 101 at Silver Cow. Saturday, January 23. 4:30 – 5:30 pm.

Class is $20 per person but mention discount code Beer101 for $5 off.

What you get:
*Enjoy four (4) different craft beer styles during the class
*Four (4) charcuterie, fromage and fruit pairings – each matched with the beer
*Class sheets and information to keep
*10% off food purchase at Silver Cow
*10% off of your container and growler fill of one of the beers used in the class
*An extra $1 off Happy Hour price for one of the beers tasted during your class
*10% off Silver Cow packaged beer (or wine) to go
*A Silver Cow sticker
*A pint glass to keep

Just tapped at The Annex & The Silver Cow : Stone Enjoy By 7-4-15 Imperial IPA – Stone Brewing Co. $3 All Day!

Just tapped at The Annex & The Silver Cow : Stone Enjoy By 7-4-15 Imperial IPA – Stone Brewing Co. Come in and EnjoyBy_7-04Enjoy All Day, drafts for $3!!

Brewer’s Notes:
9.% ABV. BA Score 98.
You have in your hands a devastatingly independent double IPA. Freshness is a key component of many beers – especially big, hoppy IPAs – but we’ve taken it further, a lot further, with this one. We brewed this IPA specifically NOT to last. We’ve gone to extensive lengths to ensure you get your hands on this beer within an extraordinarily short window, and we’ve sent a very clear message in the name of the beer itself that there is no better time than right NOW to enjoy this IPA!
