It’s Baseball Season! Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, Amazing Cuisine & Craft Beer! Yes … Craft Beer!

“Before the Rangers, there were the Spurs.”

Companion had been providing a timeline of the growth of his hometown (Arlington, Texas) including the addition of General Motors, Six Flags over Texas, the Texas Rangers Major League Baseball IMG_2499Team and more recently, the Dallas Cowboys.

His fondest childhood memories were associated with going to Turnpike Stadium to watch the Minor League franchise Dallas-Fort Worth Spurs (there prior to the Rangers) play other teams in the Texas League with names like the Amarillo Sonics, El Paso Sun Kings and the Tulsa Oilers.

The games and stadium, he said, were truly family-oriented, the players approachable and the fans “pretty darn respectful of the opposing team and of one another”.

Companion said he was there the night Gene Etter got married at home plate and the night Dick Armstrong threw a no-hitter against the Spurs. Although we have been together almost a quarter of a century, it was fascinating to hear what memories he had from his youth about his hometown baseball team.

IMG_2538I KNEW he would be so excited to learn I had been invited by Marco LaNave (Media Relations for the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp) to attend a media event at The Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville to try the incredible new menu additions to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp baseball team’s extensive food menu!

The event started at noon and before being turned loose on the delicious new creations, we were introduced to Harold Craw (General Manager of the team), Noel Blaha (Assistant General Manager) and Ernest Hopkins (Director of Food & Beverage), who provided some background on the team’s decision to expand their menu and how they chose a variety of styles and ingredients to be sensitive to those with food allergies and those who are following a certain diet regimen.
IMG_2546

IMG_2519The food will be available in at least one of the many food vendor locations stationed throughout the park. Companion and I were very excited to see Bold City Brewery and Intuition Ale Works beer available in cans and agreed the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp had knocked one out of the park by creating the Craft Cave, soon to offer a dozen different craft beer selections on draft! To find the Craft Cave, stay at street level on the third base side. Looking across A. Philip Randolph Boulevard, the Craft Cave is directly across the street from the entrance of the Jacksonville Arena.

Your toughest decision will be what food to pair with that craft beer in your hand!IMG_2528

Besides what you might consider fairly straightforward ballpark food, consider the following additions:

IMG_2507Boom Boom Shrimp in a Waffle Bowl – Popcorn Shrimp are nestled in a crispy waffle bowl, topped with green onions. This Waffle Bowl provides an easy way to tote and hold this delicious spicy dish.

IMG_2512Philly Grilled Cheese – Ground Philly steak made with peppers, onions and American cheese. Tastes as great as it sounds and smells!

IMG_2510Grilled Shrimp Po’ Boy with Cole Slaw – This traditional Sandwich is restyled with fresh grilled Mayport shrimp and topped with cole slaw. Take it from this Cajun girl, don’t miss this one!

IMG_2520Surf & Turf Burger – 8oz. burger topped with 3 Jumbo Shrimp, rested on grilled Texas Toast. A half-pound of beef and plump Jumbo Shrimp – the perfect combo to fit the Greater Jacksonville-area culture – appropriately filling and great to eat while watching the game!

IMG_2541Coconut Torpedo Shrimp (Fried Jumbo Shrimp) – A light, flaky coconut batter lends crunch to tail-on torpedo shrimp. Sweet and salty offering which will pair extremely well with a pale ale or cream ale!

IMG_2542Shrimp & Grits – These elegant bite-sized portion cakes, made with shrimp, grits and bacon bursting with coastal flavor. At a ballgame? Awesome idea! Tasty, easy to carry and hold, you’ll probably go back for another order!

IMG_2525Jumbolaya – Build deep flavors by sautéing the aromatic trinity of onion, celery and pepper in the andouille chicken and shrimp drippings with herbs, garlic and spices. Being from Louisiana, I am very picky about Jumbolaya – and this one rocked!

IMG_2522Mozzarella Caprese – Fresh mozzarella, tomato slices, basil, oregano, olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette drizzle. A great lighter and cooler option for the hot summer evenings!

IMG_2515Mayport Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail – Mayport Jumbo Shrimp served with spicy, house-made cocktail sauce. I’m going to pair this with the Mozzarella Caprese as my early-inning-appetizers!

IMG_2533Bold City Burger Pie – A grilled 16-ounce beef patty, covered with two slices of pepper jack cheese, served between two 8-inch pepperoni pizzas. Yes, a one-pound burger between two 8-inch pizzas – the Grand Slam of Portion Sizes of the new additions to the team’s impressive menu line-up!

Their classic Traditional Menu still has corn dogs, $2 hot dogs, brats, sausage, hamburgers, chicken tenders, pizza, French Fries, nachos, pretzels, peanuts cracker jacks, popcorn and Uncle Ray’s Potato Chips! Ask about adding shrimp to your nachos and pizza!

Those currently focusing on Health & Diet will find Salad Shakers, Fresh Fruit Cups, Grilled Marinated Chicken Sandwich, wraps and Kosher Hebrew National Franks awaiting them!

Ready for some sweets? How about Mr. Softee Ice Cream, brownies, cookies, candy, churros, funnel cake fries, Hippo Pops, Mini Melts, Sqwincher Sqweeze, King-sized candy bars, frozen bananas and Hot Cookie with Ice Cream?

IMG_2552

Ticket prices are a great value! Check the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp website for Season Tickets and Individual Game Tickets prices. The “Hot Corner” on the third baseIMG_2569 side is only $15 per seat AND includes one drink ticket – PLUS it is very close to the Craft Cave! That’s where companion and I will be on Opening Night (Wednesday, April 12 at 7:05 pm)!

The “Dugout Box” tickets are only $18 per seat – an amazing deal at a ballpark! There are All-You-Can-Eat Group Picnics and Special Hospitality areas for you and your loved ones, office or church group, or simply a bunch of your friends to enjoy! For Group Outing details, call 904.358.2846.

For birthday party information, contact Ashley McCallen at 904.224.8533 to find out about their amazing ticket-and-meal packages!

My sincere thanks to Marco LaNave for the invitation and to Harold Craw, Noel Blaha and Ernest Hopkins for enduring my questions and to the rest of the staff for the wonderful attentive service!

Yes, “before the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp there were the Jacksonville Suns” – but get out this season and make some “Jumbo memories” of your own with your family and friends – and eat, eat, eat – and “Root, Root, Root” for our own home team, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp!

New Bottles are in: Old Rasputin XVII Bourbon Barrel Aged Russian Imperial Stout – North Coast Brewing Co. 12.10% BBA Old RaspABV

Every year North Coast Brewing Co. age a special batch of their much-loved Russian Imperial Stout in Bourbon barrels. The depth, intensity, and complexity of the flavor profile of this special release, like its predecessors, make it a worthy tribute to Old Rasputin.

Prior to 2010, Barrel-Aged Old Rasputin was released in such limited quantities that it was available only at the North Coast Brewing retail shop in Fort Bragg, California. However, they received so many requests for this beer that we began producing enough Barrel-Aged Old Rasputin to put into broader, but still limited, distribution.

Vital Statistics

Style: Barrel-Aged
Color: Black
ABV: 12.1%
Bitterness: 38 IBUs

Goose Island Beer Co. unveils new brews …

Goose Island Beer Company is unveiling four Belgian-style wild ales from its diverse and creative portfolio. The Chicago-based beer company will debut two completely new barrel-aged farmhouse ales called Gillian and Halia, and release the 2013 vintage of the much sought after sour ales, Lolita and Juliet. Be looking for these brews at Grassroots, Beer 30, Broudy’s and ABC Liquor.

Goose Island's Gillian

Goose Island’s Gillian

With select national availability, these Goose Island creations will be part of the brewery’s Vintage Collection, Goose Island’s Gillian[/caption]which includes award-winning beers like Sofie, Matilda and Pere Jacques. Each of the barrel-aged ales features a unique story, locally sourced fresh fruit and exceptional, complex flavor profiles.

Gillian was inspired by an amuse bouche that was often prepared by the wife of Goose Island Brewer Keith Gabbett. New for 2013, Gillian is a Belgian Style Farmhouse Ale that brings together fresh ingredients sourced locally from family farms in Michigan and Illinois. Gillian is partially aged in wine barrels with 10,000 pounds of strawberries, 4,000 pounds of honey and white pepper. Its refreshing effervescent body is slightly tart and is complemented by a pronounced white pepper note that folds nicely into the sweeter hints of strawberry and honey. Gillian is 9.5% alcohol by volume and develops in the bottle for up to 5 years.

Goose Island's Halia

Goose Island’s Halia

Halia, Hawaiian for “remembrance of a loved one”, was brewed by Goose Island Brewer Brian Taylor in memory of a dear friend who loved peaches. New for 2013, Halia is a Belgian Style Farmhouse Ale aged in wine barrels with 12,000 pounds of fresh peaches, sourced locally from a family farm in Michigan. The result is a bright, effervescent beer with a soft, hazy body that finishes slightly tart and a little sweet with the pleasant character of ripe, juicy peaches. Halia is 7.5% alcohol by volume and develops in the bottle for up to 5 years.

Goose Island's Juliet

Goose Island’s Juliet

Juliet is fermented with wild yeast Brettanomyces, and aged in wine barrels with 9,000 pounds
of blackberries, sourced locally from family farms in Michigan. Tart and fruity, with complex notes of wood, tannin, dark fruit and spice, Juliet is a unique choice for beer and wine drinkers alike. Inspired by the sour beers from the Cantillon Brewery in Belgium, we named Juliet after the sister of the owner and fourth generation brewer of Cantillon – homage to a gracious host on many travels to Belgium. Juliet is 8.0% alcohol by volume and develops in the bottle for up to 5 years.

Lolita is a rose-colored Belgian Style Pale Ale fermented with the wild yeast Brettanomyces
and aged in wine barrels on 30,000 pounds of fresh raspberries, sourced locally from a family farm in Michigan. Aromas of fresh raspberries, bright jammy fruit flavors and a crisp, refreshing body make Lolita ideal for beer drinkers fond of Belgian Framboise. Lolita is 8.2% alcohol by volume and develops in the bottle for up to 5 years.

Goose Island's Lolita

Goose Island’s Lolita

“We’re incredibly proud of the depth and breadth of our barrel-aging program and excited to introduce two new and incredibly tasty beers to our fans with Gillian and Halia,” said Brett Porter, Brewmaster for Goose Island Beer Company. “The passion our brewers have for innovative brewing is unparalleled and it’s evident in their new creations.”

The sours are part of Goose Island’s wine barrel-aging program, which began in 2007 with a small 10-barrel batch of Juliet. The brewery has introduced several more beers aged in wine barrels since then including the award-winning Lolita, Madame Rose and Sofie. Goose Island now ages a variety of styles in thousands of barrels each year. Over the course of a year – the brewers at Goose Island sample, score and test beer from the barrels on a weekly basis – waiting for the flavors to peak before creating the final blend.

“Creating and blending our barrel-aged beers takes an incredible amount of skill, time and effort – as much art as it is science,” said brewer and Goose Island Head of Innovation Mike Siegel. “Creating these new beers is truly a labor of love; I feel lucky to be a part of a brewery where innovation is celebrated and encouraged.”

For more information about these beers please visit www.gooseisland.com, Facebook and on Twitter (@GooseIsland).

About Goose Island

New arrivals from New Belgium Brewery’s

New Belgium Brewery’s Winter Seasonal Accumulation White IPA, 6.2% ABV is now available around Jax!

This winter, IBUs start accumulating like snow in Colorado with New Belgium Brewery’s new Accumulation White IPA. Brewing a white IPA was not only a way to salute the white beauty falling from the sky, but a direct revolt to the longstanding tradition of brewing dark beers for winter. At least that’s what their rebellious brewer Grady Hull likes to claim as he shovels in plenty of new hop varietals and a bit of wheat for a smooth mouthfeel. Stack up a few cases of Accumulation White IPA to keep your long nights glowing blizzard white.

Between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31, play the Accumulate Hops game for a chance to win an all-expenses-paid ski trip to Colorado. Check back Nov. 1 for details.

The Humdinger Series is an offering of the rarest of ales. Complex in nature, small in batch and big in character, Humdingers are brewed for discriminating palates and are available for a very limited time. Seek them out at purveyors of only the finest beverages and on tap at better beer bars.

The signal we seek to send with our Smoked Porter, Burnpile, is this: It’s delicious. Six malts, ranging in roast from dark to darker, are used in its brewing, offering an aroma of caramel and chocolate with a subtle, complimentary smokiness. Burnpile is brewed with the goal of gathering kindred spirits seeking warmth, flavor and a small-batch craft beer.

Malts: Pale, Caramel – 80L, Chocolate, Munich, Carafa, Smoked
Hops: Apollo Yeast English Ale
Original Gravity: 18.5° Plato

AVAILABILITY / AUGUST – OCTOBER
750 mL corked bottle, Draft

The smoky flavor was there but not overpowering in the least. In other words, it is NOT like drinking bacon. I loved the chocolate caramel influence with what I felt was a very faint raisin flavor note. This very dark brown brew with its 7.5% ABV is a most enjoyable and formidable American Porter!

deVEILed Amber Ale – 5.2% ABV & 37 IBUs
SHROUDED IN OTHERWORLDLY GOODNESS

A thin veil rests between two worlds, shrouding one’s view from the other. Lives of the present and those long gone may cross the boundary if they wish, but they must first awaken to the possibility. Once eyes have opened, a harmonious convergence of life and death can be seen, the oneness deveiled, shifting into sight.

A rich and robust amber ale. Hiding just beyond its malty core is a crisp, clean, hoppy aura that will open your eyes to the other side.

Malts: 2-Row Pale, Victory, Crystal 40L, Caramel Munich, Caramel 120L, Chocolate
Hops : Magnum, Cascade Yeast English Ale
Original Gravity : 13.3° Plato

AVAILABILITY / AUGUST – SEPTEMBER
Variety Packs

This was a lot darker than I had expected, being an amber beer. It took a second sip to recognize some molasses taste with the overall caramel flavor. Delicious and surprisingly a rather sweet creation.

SÉANCE – Saison – 4.4% ABV & 27 IBUs
A LIQUID DANCE THROUGH LIFE’S TRANCE

Some mysteries are more easily attainable through collected energies and certain assembled elements of seasons, dreams and that which is not at all what it seems. Hold a Séance and peer into an ethereal world of pleasures lying just on the other side of our psyche, floating on shifting winds, through blurred seasons and between waking and sleeping bends.

Séance is a dark, complexly concocted Saison, rich with earthy hues and flavors. A mild tartness begins the journey, and an underlying hop bitterness sweeps the senses through a newly opened door of the mind, where you will soon find subtle hints of ripe fruit, bringing you to a place few dare to roam.

Malts: 2-Row Pale, White Wheat, Victory, Carafa, Flaked Oats, Crystal 80L, Cherry Wood Smoke
Hops: Goldings, Hallertaur Yeast Saison II
Original Gravity: 12.5° Plato

AVAILABILITY / AUGUST – SEPTEMBER
6-Packs, 12-Packs, Variety Packs, Draft

My lord, I loved this one! … a dark brown Saison with just enough bitterness to satisfy my palate. The word “tart” comes to mind, as well. Overall, I sensed a slight coffee flavor with a touch of chocolate.

You can currently find these three magical brews at ABC Liquors, Total Wine & More and Broudy’s Liquors.

This Oktoberfest and Halloween season promises to be outstanding in the eyes and on the palates of craft beer lovers here in Jacksonville. Be sure and take advantage of all the exciting beer events and releases available this month. Prost!
